80s Teenagers Rock!

The 80s were a pivotal decade for me, a lot of things happened to me in the 80s; I went to Big School, got a baby brother, briefly became obsessed with Norway, accidentally had my hair cut like Paul Young (it was supposed to be a Bowie, ok), the unholy mess of puberty happened and boys were invented, hurray! (I also invented kissing about this point, you can thank me for that later. Best invention of the decade, if I do say so myself, the frozen pea ice lolly which I also invented somewhere around 1985 whilst watching The Incredible Hulk coming in a close second).

Yes the 80s were a good time to be young and there is nothing more awesome or awe inspiring than the 80s teenager, they were a beautiful, bright, crazy and profligate breed who were quite often in their thirties. The 80s teenager was a rare and exotic creature with fantastical plumage that was high and proud and bright of hue and gleamed in the midday sun as they shook manes to Whitesnake.

Yes, the 80s teenager was tremendous and beyond compare, we shall never see the like again. God damn kids today think they invented teenagers, well, I’ve got news for them, they didn’t, the 80s did and there ain’t no teenagers like 80s teenagers.

  1. I totally agree! Though I wasn't a teen yet(missed it by a year), the 80s and early 90s were hands down some of my favorite times with some of the best memories. I even had a McGuyver-style mullet.

  2. Ah, the mullet. Classic. I bet yours was magnificent.

  3. all the girls I admired were into The Cure, back when the populars were into that mullet guy who was in that Take On Me video.

me? I was like the nerdy gizmo kid from The Goonies. and was proud of it too

    yep, 80's kids rock

  4. It was more subtle, like McGuyver's was. I never had the Joe Dirt/billy ray cyrus mullet... now those were powerful.

And what kind of hair did Jinx have in the 80s?

  5. Hey there, Zombie Hunter. Yeah, the Cure girls were the coolest, but as far as I'm concerned nerdy boys are always cool, those girls must have been crazy. Data was the coolest Goonie.

Oh, Rob, I'll have to try and dig out some pictures. Fortunately I don't think any survived of my accidental Paul Young (I suspect I burned them) but I'm sure some later ones of my big backcombed 80s rock hair still exist. I do have one from 1990 where I have almost exactly the same hair as I have now, which is really rather sad.

  6. I wanted to sex up every male vampire in "The Lost Boys" more than you can imagine...

  7. I dunno, Prospero, I have a pretty vivid imagination ;) And, frankly, if the Lost Boys didn't want to be sexed up Alex Winter shouldn't have worn that t-shirt.

  8. Excellent post, my love! And I couldn't agree with you more! Some great screen shots from some of my fave 80's movies too! Great to see you back on the blog-o-sphere!

Did you ever get the package I sent you? I wear my deer necklace all the time and it gets tons of compliments!

  9. Jenn, my darling! So glad you liked it.
I knew that the email I sent you hadn't gone. My internet went to crap a few weeks ago. Yes, I got my awesome package and I LOVED it! We actually just bought frames so we can put the pictures up. Love them. Thank you so much xxxx

  10. Yup. I have no idea either. I think we must have done it at school or I liked the Eurovision entry one year or something, but I became obssessed, I knew everyting; annual rainfall, population, chief exports.

  11. I know what that is long. I grew my hair long in the early 90s and had it that way for over 20 years. Its only been in the last 3 years I've had something different.

  12. I actually cut all mine off for a lot of the 90s and early 00s. Really long hair was a must in the 90s for musical shaking, 90s bands required it. Mine's only as long is it now cos I'm too lazy to cut it. Often I look like I'm only held together by make up and hair.
Just posted a 90s short pic on tumblr for you (see sidebar for link). I think there's a teenage one of me on there too with nearly the same hair as I have now.

  13. I like the short hair.
But I also want to know what the annual rainfall figure was for Norway in 1987.

  14. You were totally rocking that Lori Petty look! Least, I think that was her name. The girl that played Tank Girl.

  15. I love your insights about the 80's. The 80's is definetly the best decade. The movies, the music and the fashion. Sadly, I was born in the beginning of 88 so I wasn't a teenager till 2001. :(
